When I first met this young boy, he was just eight years old—but already carrying the weight of immense frustration.

His mum had reached out after months of unanswered questions. Doctor visits had become routine, and each specialist ran tests. However, every test came back with the same result: no issues with his eyes, vision, or brain. Consequently, no explanation followed. The only advice she received was that it would “likely resolve over time.”

Unfortunately, time wasn’t something her son could afford. Although he was excelling in maths, sports and IT, he was rapidly falling behind in reading and writing. Despite reassurances from the professionals, the problem wasn’t going away. His teachers noticed, his classmates noticed, and most of all, he noticed. The double vision wasn’t just confusing—it was distressing. Still, no one could tell her why it was happening or how to help.

Our First Sessions Together

Eventually, they came to see me. I introduced them to the Davis Dyslexia Mastery Program, which is specifically designed for children who experience the world visually and spatially. These are children who also often don’t thrive within conventional learning methods—and too often, they’re misunderstood.

From our very first sessions, we focused on introducing the Davis focusing tools. Remarkably, within a few days, something incredible happened. The double vision stopped. He had learned how to shift into focus—to become oriented. Once he made that change, the two cats, two boards, and two mums vanished.

Understandably, his mum was skeptical. She later admitted, “I wanted to believe him, but I wasn’t sure.” However, as they continued the follow-up work at home, she began to see undeniable results when he was reading. For example, when he mixed up little words like “a” and “the,” they clay-modeled them together. The next time he read them, he got them right—consistently.

Importantly, this happened not through drills or memorisation, but through clarity and hands-on understanding. The change wasn’t just academic—it was empowering.

Four Months Later: Real Results, Lasting Change

Fast forward four months, and the transformation is undeniable.

  • First and foremost, his double vision hasn’t returned.

  • In addition, homework no longer feels like a struggle—it’s easier, so he’s more willing.

  • He’s advanced a reading group at school.

  • His comprehension has improved significantly.

  • Furthermore, he now reads with thought rather than guessing.

  • Even his classroom behaviour has shifted—he’s calmer, more focused, and more present.

Most notably, the PAT reading comprehension test results confirmed his progress. Earlier in the year, he tested at Stanine 2, placing him in the bottom 11% for his age group. However, after completing the program and engaging in consistent follow-up at home, he soared to Stanine 6—the top 40%.

As his mum expressed so beautifully:

“By doing the Davis course, I feel we have changed the trajectory of my son’s life.”

What Made the Difference?

This story highlights the heart of the Davis approach. Instead of treating the symptoms, we address the root cause. In this case, the double vision wasn’t a medical problem, it was perceptual disorientation. Once I knew he could see one of one thing – a soccer ball – and two of everything else, I knew the Davis Methods could help. As the Ron Davis Methods training has taught me: ‘if you can see one of something, and then two of something, your brain or eyes are not structurally broken: your brain is doing something to see one and something else to see two. All he needed was Orientation Counselling and Davis focus tools.

Additionally, traditional phonics-based methods hadn’t helped with his reading simply because they didn’t match how his brain processes information. However, once he learned how to manage his focus and become oriented, everything changed. Reading became clearer. Understanding followed. His world came into focus—literally.

That’s the difference Davis makes. Through Orientation Counselling and focusing tools, children learn to take charge of their own perception gaining clarity, and confidence. As a result, they no longer feel lost in a system that doesn’t speak their language.

Final Thoughts

Stories like this one remind me why I do this work. Again and again, I see children come alive—rediscovering their spark, their strengths, and their joy. I see parents move from helpless to hopeful. Most importantly, I see minds that have been misunderstood finally find a way to thrive.

So, if your child is bright but struggling—if they feel out of step with traditional learning—please know there is another way.

The Davis approach may be different. However, sometimes, different is exactly what’s needed.
