Reading Programme

The Davis™ Reading Programme for Young Learners

Providing important tools to beginning readers.
Through the unique partnership philosophy of the programme,
parents or whānau or other
family members gain the skills needed to provide the child with ongoing quality support.

The Best Start

Young learners deserve the best start we can give them. Strong research evidence suggests that children who are exposed to Davis methods at pre-reading or primary level (age 5-8) benefit in the following ways:

  • They are highly unlikely to develop a learning difficulty.
  • They are significantly more likely to qualify for gifted programme referrals.
  • Their basic word recognition will be among the highest levels expected for their age group.

Our aims are

  • to provide lifelong learning skills to younger children through a partnership between Facilitator, child and parent
  • to give one or both of the child’s parent, or a support person, sufficient confidence and skill to continue working with the Davis Young Learner’s Kit after the programme
  • to provide children with the conceptual skills needed to develop reading fluency and comprehension

Typically, the Facilitator will schedule 25-30 hours of time with the student every morning over 2 weeks; at least half or more of the programme time will include the parent and/or support team participating in helping the child with the new skills and techniques.

“… tools and strategies to enjoy learning,

Duncan and Pip (parents)

Before going to the Young Learners programme, George wasn’t enjoying school. School was about being constantly reinforced by what he was struggling with, with one prescribed way to teach and limited tools in the toolbox to help. We were seeing a negative impact on his confidence, imagination, creativeness and health. Going to Claire gave him tools and strategies to enjoy learning, and gave him an understanding of how his beautifully dyslexic brain works and how to harness that power.

George (9 years)

With Claire I learnt how to form my letters properly, I learnt that I have to be at 5/7 on my dial to learn and I can change where I am on my dial.  Before I went to Claire, I didn’t feel good about my reading, writing or maths because the way the teachers were trying to teach me didn’t work.  After being at Claire’s, I like reading and I’m now in the top reading group at school, and writing I can now let my stories come out and my teacher can read my stories. I still have to work with Claire on my maths but Claire has already helped me, maths is about three bits of information, you always get two and you just have to work out the third. I am looking forward to going back to Claire to finish my maths.
